Common (US) Recipe Abbreviations and Measurements

You may come across these abbreviations or units of measure in my recipes, although many times I cook with ‘a handful of this or that’ rather than exact measurements. Hope this list helps.

c. = Cup (US) = 240mL; 8 oz; 16 Tbls; 1/2 pt.; 1/4 qt.; 1/16 gal.

gal. = Gallon = 128oz; 3.785 liter; 4 qt.; 8 pt.; 16 c.

lb. = Pound = 16oz (dry measure); 2.2kg

oz. = Fluid Ounce = 2 Tbls; 6 tsp; 30mL; 1/8 c.; 1/16 pt.; 1/32 qt.; 1/128 gal.

pt. = Pint = 16oz; 2 c.; 1/2 qt.; 1/8 gal.

qt. = Quart = 32 oz; 4 c.; 1/4 gal.

Tbls. = Tablespoon = 3 tsp.; 1/2 oz; 1/16 c.; 15mL

tsp. = Teaspoon = 5mL; 1/3 Tbls.
